noautosub Flag in advanced settings not working

I am trying to figure out how to default subtitles to off, and the noautosub flag in the advanced settings is not doing the trick. Any ideas?

-noautosub will prevent external subtitle files from even loading so they're then not available even after playing the video.

Sounds like you're dealing with embedded subtitles. For that you want:

-nosub

They're still available, but not pre-selected. This has no affect on the external subtitle videos.
